Catching Up With My Past (Part 1)

On My Original Website I posted up a diary which I guess is like a blog now so here is my past diary content:

07-21-01: Contact and Summer Dreams - I got home from Idaho about 8:00pm. Had some sushi and got about 2 hours of sleep before I hit the road to Moreno Valley to go to Contact. My set time was at 1:30 and I got there about 1:00 am. Hung out for a little bit and then made my way to the tables. Paule showed up right on time for us to start our 2x4. The set went well. This is the third time we have done a 2x4 and I feel that we are getting a really good feeling for each other. We play off each other well. There were plenty of people watching us and feeling the vibe. The crowd wasn't huge but it had more of a family type of vibe. It was really nice. After my set I headed out to the Masterdome for the last party there ever. The party was called Summer Dreams. I knew this party was going to have a ton of kids there. It being the last Masterdome party means that people are going to come out and pay their respects, like a huge funeral. The whole party was being held in that back area since one of ceiling beam inside broke and fell recently. The had a nice tent set up but the sound was seriously lacking. Oh well. When I got there Darky was finishing up his set. Sounded nice from what I heard. I then got on the decks and the crowd was just feeling it. There was a nice reaction to what I was spinning and people seemed to be enjoying their last minutes at the Dome since I was playing the last set there ever. The security came up to me and told me that there were rumors of trouble happening by some individuals right before the party was supposed to end. What they had me do was get on the mic and try and calm down the crowd. The told me that there were going to throw a $5 dollar event the week after to thank the people that have come down to the dome. I did my best to help steer the crowd in the right direction. I later found out that the $5 event was not true, they just said it to keep the people happy. I understand why they did this but there should have been a better way. Anyway I closed out the masterdome with my remix of "Drifting" by the Speaker Junkies. Wow I couldn't believe I was actually playing something I had something to do with. It was great feeling. Drove back home and was soon back on the road to help my good friend Brett (DJ Flite) move to Austin. I came back home on Tuesday.

07-20-01: Tiny Bursts of Engery (Boise, ID) - Get up at 6:00 am to make my 8:00 am flight. I hate early flights. Oh well. I get to LAX and wait for Wedoe to show up because he has our tickets. We hop on the plane and then switch planes in Phoenix. We land in Idaho at about 2:00 pm. We get into our hotel room and chill out, relax, watch some TV and sleep. At 11:00 pm the promoter picks us up and we head over to the venue. It is a outdoor ranch. The main stage is outdoors while the second stage is in a barn. My set is from 1:00am to 3:00am. The sound looked impressive. To bad the cops came earlier in the night and forced them to keep it at a almost inaudible range. The monitors were much louder then the system. I tried my best to boost up the sound but it just was not doing much at all. I played my set but was disappointed in the sound and I felt I really could not give the crowd my best. Wedoe was supposed to go on after me but he decided to switch his set to second area where people were dancing a bit more and the sound was louder. The sound wasn't better though. The sound in there pretty much sucked but Wedoe did a great job and keeping the vibe and dancers going. I then did some back to back DJing with him from 4:00 to 5:00. We went back to the hotel. Got some sleep and checked out. The promoters picked us up and took us out to eat some asian food. Then we headed back to the airport for the long ride home.

07-14-01: Atlantis & Fable - This was supposed to be a epic night. We were supposed to have our own Biohazard room at Fable and I was looking forward to a new outdoor location. I got a email on Thursday night saying that the party was moved to La Casa in Downtown. Also they cut a lot of DJ's since they can only have 4 rooms now. Luckily all the Biohazard guys were still spinning. On Friday I get a call from the promoter saying that the 4 rooms had been cut to 2 rooms now and that most of my guys are not booked now. Well this sucks. They only wanted Tony, Paul and Myself from Biohazard. I had worked a couple of things so that Gabe could spin because he flew down here and he really wanted to spin. The party was going to start at 5:00 pm. We get there at 5:00 and the party is still being set up. We go inside and Gabe spins for the people setting up basically. We hang out for a while and then leave. My set isn't till 1:00 am. I take a nap and wake up to go to the event. When I get there at 12:45 the party is already shut down. I talked to the promoter and he said it was a lack of sales that brought the party to its knees. I feel really bad about this event. I looked like it really could have been a great one. I then go back home to take another nap. Living 15 min away from Downtown LA has its' advantages. My set at Atlantis isn't till 5:00 am. Atlantis was moved from its orginal location to Orion in downtown. I got there right before my set and I could not believe how packed the place was. I have spun at Orion many times but have not seen it look this way. The energy was amazing. My hour long set just didn't seem like enough time though. It was a rocking party for sure and I was glad to be able to give some energy to the morning hours. Drove back home... and slept...

07-13-01: Wow!! A night off. I went had had dinner with friends and then went to see the Final Fantasy movie. Not a bad day at all.

07-07-01: The Bitwise Wedding & Invasion (Northern Cali) - During the day I attended the wedding of my good friend Chris Arnold (othewise known as my studio partner and artist Bitwise). He and his now wife, Lisa, had a beautiful ceremony in Malibu. I had to read a poem during the ceremony which was quite a honor. To be honest, I have never been so nervous. I mean I have spun in front of thousands of people but reading this poem in front of a hundred people freaked me out. I did a good job though! I couldn't stay long and had to skip the reception to make my plane on time to San Francisco. I got on my plane at the last moment and headed up. The actual party was about a hour away in a town called Vacaville. I made my way to the hotel to take a nap. I woke up and headed out. The party was in a lazer tag facility and arcade. The setup was nice. I was nervous though because I had to do a 2x4 with DJ Liquid and he and I have not talked about this 2x4 at all. I figured I would talk to him before our set at the party but he was running late. At exactly 1:00 am he shows up and we barely get to shake hands before we start spinning. He played some nice hard trance and I layered over some scratching. The crowd seemed to really enjoy themselves. The energy was amazing. After my set I stayed for a second and passed out some CD's. I then went back to the hotel and slept and got ready for my early flight home.
07-06-01: The party I was supposed to spin at, "Summertime", was cancelled. I got to sleep instead...that was a nice change of pace.

06-30-01: EDC, Evolution and EDC Afterhours - After getting home from Orion at about 3:30 am I was soon out of bed and awake to spin at Electric Daisy Carnival. This year the party ended up being a daytime massive and was set to open doors at 11:30 am. My first thought was, what raver is waking up at 10:00 am on a Saturday to go to this party early. I hoped a lot since I was opening the event at 12:00 noon. I was pleasantly surprised at how many people were there waiting in line when I got there. The location was beautiful. Hansen Dam is a Los Angeles County Public Park. The park was tad dusty but there was plenty of shade under the beautiful trees. I walked in and there were carnival rides and vendors everywhere. If you can imagine a state fair on acid then you pretty much have the picture. I made my way to the stage and started spinning. I kept noticing that people were still in line and not being let into the party. When they finally opened up the doors it was well past my set. Doh!! Oh well, I then decided to check out the vendors and say hello to some friends. After that the heat was fully bothering me (I don't do well in the heat) and I decided that it was time to go get some sushi. After some sushi I headed home to rest because my day had just started. At about midnight I headed over to Evolution which was being held at Smokeys in Baldwin Park. This place is kind of small and dank but it does feel very underground. The nice part is that it is only 20 minutes from my house. Tony Gamboa and I did a back to back set but he had to take off at 1:30 so I spun to 3:00 am on my own. The crowd was very responsive and kept me wanting to give them the best that I could. After my set I quickly got out of there and headed over to the Mastedome where there was going to be an afterhours for EDC. Paule called me on my way there and told me that the party was just going off!!! I got there at about 3:45 and the party was just pumping. They had close to 3000 kids in there. I was amazed. I haven't seen that place like that for awhile. I started spinning at 4:00 am and closed the place down at about 5:15. The crowd was still hungry from more when it was over. That was a great way to end my day.

06-29-01: Orion - I have to say that I love this club. The location is awesome. From what I heard it used to be a old opera house. The sound inside is incredible. It totally surrounds you. This was my third time spinning there and I have to tell you it gets better and better. I really feel this club may become a major player in Los Angeles. I really hope so at least. I think I am going to start spinning there every other Thursday soon. I hope this club last for a while. It is a great place that more people need to check out.

06-26-01: My first CD under the name Reef Project is ready to hit the streets. Yesterday I gave them to my distributor and hopefully they will be in stores soon. I am excited about this. I have never released my own musical ideas before and the chance for people to listen to my own material is just amazing to me. I have my fingers crossed.

06-23-01: Sanctuary and Glowstix - After about 3 hours of sleep I went into the studio with Gabe and Flite to keep working on a track that we all started on Wednesday. After that I went out to dinner with family and friends. I was dead on my feet at this point. Exhausted beyond belief to be exact. At 10:30 I headed out to Corona to spin at Sanctuary. Luckily Gabe came with me so I would not have to drive alone. It is funny how I can be dead tired and feel so alive as soon as I step up to the tables. The location was this sweet warehouse. The vibe was super thick and everyone looked as if they were having a wonderful time. I spun from 12-1. I wished I had a longer set but I was happy with my set. The room was alive. I then headed over to the Masterdome (again) for Glowstix. See the only problem I have with the Masterdome is that people don't do anything with it. A lot of people don't get creative with it. The sound was good but the stage needed something extra. There was about 1200 people and most everyone looked like they had a good time. My only pet peeve was people requesting songs. I don't mind but don't be disappointed if I don't have Sandstorm or The Launch. I never owned those records. I want to play the sounds of the underground. That is what I am. A underground DJ. I am not a club DJ. After the party I took off to head home and grabbed some Krispy Kremes on the way.

06-22-01: BioDome - I put a lot of time, effort and money into this event. I wanted it to be a fun party regardless from the turnout and it looks like I achieved that. We only got about 650 people at the party but everyone walked away with a free CD or mixtape. I kept all my promises for the event. The setup at the Masterdome was just amazing thanks to the hard efforts of Freaky Frank on the visuals. I told myself that either way with this event I win. I got to promote myself, Biohazard, My fellow DJ's and the Reef Project. So that is not bad payoff at all.

06-16-01: Logic (Waterloo, Iowa) - After getting little sleep (one hour to be exact) I head over to LAX to make my plane on time. 9:00 am is a pretty early flight when you just got in at 5:00 am. I first fly to St. Louis. I avoid some lame movie with Freddie Prinze Jr. by listening to some MiniDiscs and reading. Then from St. Louis I take a short flight over to Waterloo. I have to tell you, It is a very pretty city but not much to it. Dead tired, the promoters drop me off to the Hotel and I go to sleep immediately. It is about 7:00 pm their time and I don't have to spin till 4:00 am. At about 12:00am I am awake. I watch some TV for a bit and fall in and out of sleep. At about 3:00 am I get ready and head to the venue, which is a convention center that is connected to the Hotel via a Skywalk. I get there and I am told that the sets have been pushed back by 2 and a half HOURS!! So now I don't have to spin till 6:30 am. Oh well. I go back to my room and rest. The party looked great. The set up was great and people looked happy. When I get back at about 6:15 am Mike Myers from Philly is manning the decks and doing a great job. I then take over and guide people with some morning trance. The party was STILL GOING OFF. It was great, there were a lot of people still there to hear me. That still amazes me that people will wait just to hear me. WOW! After my set I head over back to the hotel, order some breakfast and fall back to sleep. My flight isn't until 1:30 pm for the long trek back home.

06-15-01: Utopia - Good party at the Masterdome. Should have had more people. The vibe was cool though and everyone was happy. Did a 2x4 set with Huggie. This one wasn't one of our better ones but it was still solid. He and I are just ultra critical of ourselves. He is just as much of a perfectionist as I am. I had to try and get out of their early so I could rest a little before I had to make my plane to Iowa.

06-09-01: Everything (San Diego) - Tony and I drove down to SD around 9:30 pm. Our set wasn't till 4:00 am and I wanted us to check in the hotel and relax a bit. We had some difficulty finding the hotel (especially when you have two of the same name about a block apart). After some rest we headed out. I wanted this party to go off so badly. Everything was perfect. The setup was killer (except for the shakey stage). The sound was amazing. The crowd just wasn't there. At the time of our set we had about 200 people. But it looked even smaller since the location was the San Diego Sports Arena. Tony and I rocked the 2x4 and had a good time playing off each other. The crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves. We then went back to the hotel and slept....

06-08-01: All Tranced Out & Cotton Cande - I was expecting this night to be rather interesting since both of these parties looked good and had similar line-ups. My first set was at All Tranced Out. The location was the Masterdome and everything looked in place for this event to go off. Unfortunately it did not. I really like the guys at New Dance Creations. I was sorry that what looked like such a great event did not get the numbers they wanted and deserved. I saw them promoting for that event all the time. I am sure they will do much better at their next event. I then headed over to Cotton Cande, which was the Cadillac Bowl in Moreno Valley. I was happy that it wasn't that far of a drive. As I pulled in I was amazed to see how many cars were in the lot. They had a ton of people at this event. Everyone looked like they were having the time of their lives. After promoting BioDome a bit I headed inside to spin my closing set. My only complaint was that the turntables were on a table that was just way to low thus causing some back strain and the monitor was just crap. Oh well though. I closed it out with some very melodic trance that just feels so good in the morning and then headed back home to Pasadena.
