More diary postings from my past:
09-01-01: Strobe (McAllen, TX) - One of my best friends Manuel moved to Texas a couple of years ago and started DJing Jungle under the name DJ Zero. I haven't seen him in awhile and a couple a of weeks before this event he calls me and asks me if I would like to come to South Texas to spin at a event with him on Labor Day weekend. How can I refuse a friend. I got to McAllen about 6:40 in the evening. Sage and Abstract from San Fran were also on the plane. Manny met us at the gate and then checked us into the hotel which was right across the street. Apparently we were supposed to meet and greet the crowd before the event started. Sage wasn't feeling well so she stayed as Abstract and I went to the venue. The doors opened at 8:00 but there was no music till 8:30. We met the crowd, gave away CD's and signed autographs. I was almost surreal. We then left with Manny for some Dinner. Got back to the venue around 11:00 to watch Manny spin his set. Amazing. He was really good and I was very impressed by his skills and track selection. I went on after he gave me a amazing introduction. The set started smooth but soon both monitors that I had on stage were both out. I had to then mix with the headphones. It wasn't bad at all and by all accounts the set went very smooth. They replaced the monitors during Sages' set and what a set it was. That girl just straight out rocks. I wish I got to hear more of Abstracts' set of Two Step but I was tired at that point and needed to get some sleep and get ready to head back to LA. It was great to see my old friend again. I just hope the next time is sooner. One more thing. Never eat Chinese food in Texas. Not a good thing to do to your stomach. Blah!!
08-25-01: Club Sugar (Pure) - I had such a crappy Friday that Saturday needed to make up for it. And did it ever. This was my first time at Club Sugar. It is a great spot. My best friend, Mark and I got their around a hour before my set. We got to the bar and shared a round of Newcastles (I didn't realize they also have Sake at the bar also... NICE) . The crowd was in full swing. Older and more mature but with a energy that I haven't seen at a rave in a while.I got on at midnight and rocked the tables for 2 hours. The crowd was loving it and that made me want to give them all that I could. The energy was amazing and just being thier with good friends and new friends made it a whole lot nicer. If you are 21+ and in Santa Monica on a Saturday, I highly recommend it. Especially if I am spinning. LOL :)
08-24-01: Glow - I was really looking forward to this event. It was going to be held at the Tropicana in Hollywood. I got a call at around 11:00 pm saying that the event was going to be shut down. Damn that sucks. I was ready to go.
08-18-01: Life & Evolution - This was supposed to be the day that many of us in So-Cal were looking for. JuJuBeats was here. Earlier in the week a lot of drama went down and the event was a no go. Well that wasn't going to stop people from trying to go out and salvage their weekend. The first event I did was "Life" at the Cadillac. I started off the event but there was large crowd from the beginning of the night. The energy was great. Many wanted to dance their cares away. I just wanted to spin mine away. After my set, Mike Fix went on the rock the crowd that was now ready for peak time action. I then headed over to Smokey's in Baldwin Park for Evolution. I always like spinning at Evolution. The crowd was ready to dance. The sound was good. The place was sticky and hot and for some reason that just felt good. The crowd kept wanting more and more. A good night despite what should have happened that night....
08-11-01: Snorks - Once again I have to drive out the Moreno Valley to the Cadillac. This time the party was going to remain open for my set but once again the attendance was low due to the promoters being forced by the Fire Marshall to turn people away at the door. Johnny Matrix and NDE were finishing up thier set when I got there and I took over the helm after them. I spun in this room over the crowd which I really didn't like since I could not feel the energy of the crowd. I would have much rather been on the floor with them. I was happy with the set and went home satisfied with the night.
08-10-01: NRGizer - Another party at the Cadillac Club. The capacity at the Cadillac is now cut in half since the bowling alley (which was used as the main dancefloor) was now not abled to be used due to the Fire Marshall. I am sure that was some of the cause of the low attendance as they had to turn some people away. I wished the party would have went off. I was hoping for a good time but when I get there I was told that the party was going to end right before I was going to spin.
08-09-01: Futher (Tucson, AZ) - When I landed I was taken surprise at how mild the weather was. Apparently I came on a good day. I was expecting some of the worst heat I have ever felt but it was amazingly pleasent. After the promoters picked me up the droped me off at the hotel where I rested for a couple of hours. At around 11:00 they picked me up and we then headed over to the club. When I arrived the club wasn't packed but there were people milling about everywhere except on the dancefloor. The DJ before me was playing some great tribal-trance stuff. I started spinning at midnight and started where he left off. The floor quickly filled and stay filled until I ended my set at 2:00 am. The energy on the floor was great and I left feeling very satisfied with the night. I went back to the hotel and slept dreaming of music. When I got back into LA that next day I was informed of the cancellation of JuJuBeats. Damn...just when you were feeling good...
08-04-01: Bigger - After the flight home I rested for a bit and headed out to Bigger which was to be held at the Cadillac Club. As soon as I pulled up my car into the driveway I could see that this was going to be a great party. The amount of people was just amazing. When I went into the main area and saw my good friend Paule going off, I was re-affirmed that this was going to be a good night. After Paule's amazing set I went on and took the crowd into the realms of trance music. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and the energy was just amazing. This was one of the better parties that I have been to at the Cadillac. I think a lot of people would agree with me on that.
08-03-01: The Matrix West (Oakland) - I cannot express how much I love going to the bay area. San Francisco is probably one of my favorite places to visit. I am just in love with the city and its' charm. When I got a call from my friend Andy (DJ Tronic) to come up and spin for a club he is trying to help out how could I say no. When I landed in Oakland, Andy and Reese met me at the airport. We then proceeded to Berkeley to get some grub. I cannot remember the name of this pizza place but it was amazing. Old style chicago pizza with a great sauce. We then went to check me into my hotel across the bay for a quick nap. The hotel was great. Near the corner of Market and 5th. Just beyond the lobby was the hustle and bustle of San Fran. After my nap they picked me up at around 11:00 pm. We drove over into Dowtown Oakland where the club was located. The club was nice. A lot of potential. I was spinning upstairs and it was filled with mainly a younger crowd that was more into break dancing then grooving on the floor. The guy spinning before me was spinning very hard U.K. House so when I got on to play there was a big switch in the music. A lot of people who were break dancing now started just to dance. The energy was a tad strange. The was a small pocket of people who seemed to really be enjoying themselves. After my set Michaeal Liu continued from where I started playing some of the most amazing melodic Goa I have ever heard.
07-28-01: Nation - I was looking forward to this event. Nation last year was one of my favorite parties. This year has not been a great year so far for the scene and a lot of things have suffered. Nation was no exception. This year it was at the Cadillac Club in Moreno Valley. This venue can only hold about 2000 on a good day. A far cry from the 30,000 people of last years Nation. Melo from Channel 36 wanted his party to go on so he made sure had a venue that could last till 6:00 am. I got there at about 12:00 and my set was from 12:30 to 2:00. The crowd was good. They wanted to dance and have a good time despite the change in venues. Their energy sparked me to give them as much as I could. I only got to play for a hour however, due to some time conflicts. I had a good time though and met a lot of nice people as I walked through the crowds. After my set I hung around with Melo and Lenny V for a while before I took off for home and some much needed rest.
07-27-01: Terrestial Gateway (Denver, CO) - The flight from SLC to Denver was a short one. When I got into Denver we made our way to the hotel where I watched MTV 2 (why do they play all the cool videos and MTV plays crap) and slept for a while. I had a really nice hotel room that felt more like a little apartment. My good friend Jack lives in Denver and he was going to come out and visit with me and go with me to the event. When he showed up I was just getting out of bed. I went over to reach for my glasses on the night stand. When I went to put them on I realized they were broken! SHIT!!! I have pretty bad eyesight and I cannot imagine trying to spin without my glasses. I wouldn't know what I was doing with the mixer. When the promoters picked me up they tried to find some glue for me but to no avail. We went to the event and tried to fix my glasses with scotch tape. Damn, it looked pathetic. Luckily the local trance DJ and the promoter of this event, Shazad and his wife Erica came to my rescue. Apparently he was also near-sighted and since he was wearing his contacts he didn't need his glasses. They came pretty close to my presciption. He let me borrow them till I got back to LA and then I could mail them back to him. That was a very nice gesture and something I truely appreciate. I went into the party and the vibe was great. DJ Colette was rocking the crowd with some great house beats and she has a amazing voice. I soon went on and started off my set housier so I wouldn't lose that vibe. I then went into progressive trance and kept them dancing for Shazad to go on after me. I then went back to the hotel room with Jack and just kicked it for a bit. After he left I went back to sleep and get ready for my flight back home.
07-26-01: Club Bricks (Salt Lake City, Utah) - I love spinning at this club, but I was debating going or not. The night before I was in the studio and decided to take out some trash when I lost my footing on some stairs and came tumbling down, thus spraining my ankle. I was in so much pain. My flight wasn't till about 3:00 pm so I decided to go to the doctor first. They did some x-rays on me and told me that it wasn't broken but severely sprained. They gave me a brace for my foot, a cane and some drugs to kill the pain. I then got a ride to the airport. When I got into Salt Lake the owner of the club, Tom, picked me up from the airport and helped me out. Tom is a amazing man. I usually stay at his house when I spin for him. His house is beautiful. It is in the hills above the capital building. Nicely decorated, a view to kill for and everything else you could want in a home. He gave me his room (which also has the killer view) to crash in and made sure I was comfortable at all times. We got to the club about 11:30 pm and my set was at midnight to 2:00 am. This was my first time to spin at Bricks in the summer and the vibe was amazing. The crowd was just so into the music. My 2 hour set wasn't long enough. It is funny how when I am spinning I feel no pain. After my set I went back to Tom's house and slept soundly. When I woke up I had to get ready to go to the airport for another trip.
