Catching Up With My Past (Part 3)

And even more postings from my past:

11-24-01: Earth & As The Beat Goes On - Another night of LA and Moreno Valley. I first spun at As The Beat Goes On at Orion. The vibe was nice but it was just getting started. It kinda bummed me out that I had to leave so early from this event because it looked like it was going to be a good one. After leaving and starting to head down to Moreno Valley I first had to catch the freeway from Downtown. The traffic signals in Dowtown LA just suck. They are on timers and even if there is no traffic the opposite way you could be waiting at a red light for 5 minutes. ARGH!! Doesn't the city realize I have a schedule to keep. After making to the Cadillac a little late (I told the promoter I would be) I found another DJ taking my spot and I was going to take his. Why didn't they just do that in the beginning so that I didn't have to drive like a maniac. ARGH!!! Oh well. I got on to spin for the light crowd that was there but at least the energy was still there.

11-17-01: Lickety Split (San Francisco) - I was ready to get start my little vaction. The plan was to drive up to the bay area to DJ for Skills and then take a couple of days to slowly drive down the coast. The Skills party was held at the Billy Graham Auditorium near City Hall in downtown SF. The building was beautiful. I made it just in time for my set and followed up DJ D, who is a local Hard NRG pioneer. She rocked the crowd. I took it down but then built it back up. The crowd was amazingly responsive. I had a great time spinning for them. DRC then took the controls keep the crowd going. All I have to say is this party was amazing. Oh yeah...one more thing... don't forget your cell phone at a party.. I was lucky I found it.... After the party it was just rest and relaxation all the way back down to LA. Do yourself a favor and take Highway 1 all the way...so beautiful. Also stay in Pismo beach with a room looking over the ocean.

11-16-01: Final Fantasy & Club Red - I always have a good time on my b-day and this was no exception. I first went to the Cadillac where Final Fantasy was being held. The crowd was not has big as I thought it might be but they had a good vibe. After I played my set I got plenty of B-Day wishes from the crowd and my fellow DJ's. It felt good. By the time I got out of their I only had a hour to get over to Red in Downtown LA. I don't know how I got there so fast but I did. Wedoe was playing when I got there and he was rocking the crowd the way only he can. I got on and pushed the crowd as hard as I could. After my set the crowd sung "Happy Birthday" to me and then the club presented me with a cake. It was a great way to celebrate my b-day. I took the cake outside where I gave it to a homeless person to enjoy. He needed it far more then I did.

11-03-01: ???? (Tucson, AZ) - For some reason, I cannot remember the name of this party. When I remember I will make sure to put it in here. This time I had easier time at LAX. They finally opened up the central parking lots which means I could park there and just go to the terminal instead of parking way out there and getting a shuttle to drop me off. The parking lot was empty and it was about 6:00pm on a Saturday night. I then went to the terminal for United and found it empty as well. Nice! I quickly got my ticket and was on my way. Once I arrived I soon discovered that there was no one to pick me up. I contacted my ride but he said someone else was picking me up. I got tired of playing phone tag with the promoter and decided to call the hotel to have the shuttle pick me up. I then chilled in my room and then called a taxi to take me to the venue. The party was in event center in the middle of downtown Tucson. I got there and made my way to the tables. I chatted with some of the locals and then got ready to spin. The set went down very nice but the crowd fluxuated all night. I was still statisfied with the evening. Got back to the hotel, slept a bit and started on my way back home.

11-02-01: Teknoklub - Finally the return of Teknoklub. I was waiting for this to happen. The location was in Downtown off of Spring St. near 9th. I have never been to this location before but it was PHAT!!! Took the Elevator up to the 3rd floor and made my way to the turntables where Donald Glaude was fucking shit up as usual. I followed him and the crowd just kept getting better and better. The sound was good and the vibe was in the air. I really wanted to stay the whole night but I couldn't since I was going out of town the next day and I had to attend a wedding before my trip. I needed to get some rest. I was happy to discover later though that Teknoklub was moving to Orion and was going to go off every Friday where I would be a resident and spin every Friday I was in town. NICE!

10-27-01: Fun Haus (Houston, TX) - I got a call at about 9:00 am while I was on my way to the airport telling me not to get on the plane. The event was going sour and I should better off at home. Kinda glad I stayed home. I got to go to my best friend's brothers bachelor party. It was fun to see a lot of my old friends from High School. But something about 30 horny men and 3 strippers wasn't that appealing to me. But seeing my best friend get spanked by his own belt was a memory I will cherish forever.
10-20-01: The Music Needs You - If you have nothing nice to say then it is better to say nothing at all. So....well at least I got my new bed delivered today. Ahhhh what a good rest feels like...

10-19-01: Frequency & Secret Squirrel - I really dig Arkham Ent. Eugene is one of the most talented and kind hearted people in the scene. I know Frequency didn't have the turn out that he wanted but the crowd that was there was sure enjoying themselves. Once again it was at the new venue in Chinatown. Eugene got on the tables a little late after me so I was a few minutes late to Secret Squirrel which was about 20 minutes away in a loft in another part of LA. The sound was kept really low due to the cops coming down because of noise complaints. I closed down the party and hung out with John from ROAM for just a little bit after the event. I went home and and fought the sunlight for sleep.

10-13-01: Grand Opening & Escape Aftahours - Grand Opening was the official kick off to the new venue that Where's Wabbit was at. The event was great. I came in during Huggie's set and he was rocking the crowd. I followed him and the crowd was very responsive. Reza was on after me and he looked like he was ready to keep the vibe flowing. I then ventured to Escape. I always have a good time spinning there. It is located at the Grand Ave Club in downtown LA. My set was from 5-7 in the morning. The crowd was still into the vibe and having a great time. The lasers and visuals are also top notch. I totally recommend this place for that late night/early morning vibe. Another great night in LA.

10-12-01: Where's Rabbit - I am not sure why this was the name of this party but it was a good time. It was the premier of a new venue im Chinatown called "The Carousel". What the place is, is a Dim Sum restaurant with 2 floors that could be used and a small stage on each floor. The crowd was thin but the vibe was there. I look forward to more events at this location.

10-06-01: Pyrotechnics (Oshkosh, WI) - After I woke up I got some breakfast and got myself ready for my flight to Wiconsin. I got into Milwaukee at about 8:00 and had about a hour and a half drive ahead of me. Lucky for me I was picked up by Alex Hall. He is a local DJ and one hell of a nice guy. I had the pleasure of hanging out with him the last time I was in Wisconsin. We headed up to Oshkosh. The weather was on the chilly side. We decied to grab some grub near the venue. It was a great restaurant with great micro-brews. After the food I was dropped of at the Hotel for about a hours worth of rest. The party was in a huge indoor fairgrounds. I walked in and was amazed by the set up in the main room. It had a nice stage. I heard there were fire eaters but for some reason the local police made them stop. I, however was not in this room. I was put into a second stage good timeslot instead of the main stage with a early timeslot. I wished for the early timeslot. The sound in the second room was a joke. To make it worst the sound guys were drunk of thier asses and were more worried about making a ass of themselves on the mic then fixing the sound. I was pissed to say the least. Especially after I went back to grab a record from my bag and one of the sound guys was trying to mix my record for me. It was a very unpleasant experience. I tried my best though and although the crowd was there, the lack of sound and the decor in the side room made it very hard to compare to the main room. After my set I check out the party. The main room had 4 DJ's playing and doing tricks. It sounded good for the most part but sometimes they went from house to hip hop and most of the crowd was not able to follow. This party was a big production for the promoter Andrew. He is a great guy and I have spun for him before and had a excellent time. This time was just not a good time for me. But I think his big break out party is in the works. Like I said before, he is a great promoter and a good person. I know he will get the attention and reaction that he deserves. After a few hours sleep and frantically trying to find a way back to Milwaukee, I was finally heading back home. Back to the mayhem, but at least it is home..

10-05-01: Destination Earth (El Paso, TX) - Well here it is. I was kind of not looking forward to this day because I knew I had to deal with the airport for the first time since the terrorist attacks. As could be expected, it was not fun. I parked my car at a parking lot near the airport and had them shuttle me in. It was kind of strange to see LAX look more like a ghost-town then it's usual mayhem. But I was wrong. The mayhem was indeed there. Not in the amout of cars but it the lines that wrapped around the terminals. I proceeded to get in the ticketing line. I tried to ask the employees at the airline if there was a quicker way. Luckily, the skycab as open and I was able to get my ticket quickly. I then had a huge line to get into security. Again luckily, my flight was coming up rather quickly so they sped me through the line. When I arrived in El Paso, I had a short walk to the hotel. I then rested and got some room service. Around 1:00 am or so I got picked up to head out to the party. After the 40 minute drive we pull up to a race track in the middle of no where. There were three areas that I noticed. I was ushered to the press box that was used as the VIP room. The main reason I was inside the room because it was freezing and windy outside. I could hear Dieselboy's set as I chilled and chatted with the local DJ's and crew. I then got outside and got ready for my set. It was nice to see Dieselboy again. I haven't seen him in years. It was strange to follow his set but I threw in some nice beats. The first 10 minutes was mainly coming out of the monitors since the sounds shut down during my first record. After the problem was fixed the rest of my set went down without a hitch. The crowd was rocking and the love was in the air. After my set I chilled with Koppertop from Salt Lake (who is a great trance DJ by the way) and headed back to the hotel to get some sleep before my flight to Wisconsin.

09-29-01: Electric Ave. (Tijuana, Mexico), Family Fun Center (San Diego) & Heaven on Earth - This was going to be a night from hell. I first had 2 gigs. One in Mexico and then closing out Heaven on Earth at the Cadillac. I was then emailed to do a third event in San Diego. The SD promoters had hired me to do a party in August but then cancelled after they sent the deposit. It was agreed upon that the deposit would then go to a future event. When they emailed me I told them that I also had 2 other gigs and it was highly unlikely that I would be able to make time for it. They then told me that I could have anytime I wanted. I was scheduled to spin in TJ from 11-1 so as long as I got out of Mexico on time then it would work out. I started out my journey heading down to TJ. Can you believe I have lived in So Cal all my life but this was the first time I was going to TJ. I have been to other parts of Mexico in my travels but never just to Tijuana. I meet up DJ Torin at a parking lot on the US side of the boarder. He then drives me across and we get to the club about 3 minutes before I was set to go on. I was setup on a stage in this outdoor patio while the second room was the actual club. The night started off slow but by the time I was started my second hour the crowd was rocking. I really wanted to see Torin's set but he knew I had to leave right after I was done. He then walked me across the boarder and I made it to my car at 1:35. I had to be at the second event at 2:00. I got to the Family Fun Center at a few minutes after 2. They had closed down the main area due to sound complaints but kept a second area for me to spin in. I was able to get out of there around 3:30 and just in time to get over to Heaven at Earth at the Cadillac. After speeding up the 215 I got to the Cadillac about 15 min early. Apparently I was about 15 min too late as the party got busted right before I got there. Damn and I was on time!!!! Oh well...

09-28-01: Virtue - This was at the Cadillac. Good event. When I got there Paule was rocking the crowd hard. I followed him up after that and gave the kiddies some nice trance beats to chew on. The crowd was good and kept the energy all night long. MIP always throws quality events. I had to get home quickly after the party since I had one hell of a night the next night.

09-22-01: Evolution & Insomnia - As I said before I really do enjoy spinning at Evolution. Although the location is just OK the people that seem to come out for this club more then make up for it. Once again the people were rocking and the energy was top notch. I went through my records earlier in the day and found some oldies but goodies to work into my set. It was great to watch some of these kids hear these songs for the first time. I had a excellent time spinning there like always. I then went to the afterhours Insomnia to close the night there from 5-7 am. The energy was still there and the crowd was very responsive to my music. The sound in there is great. I love spinning on Turbosound. It just simply has the cleanest sound for electronic music. I must say I had a very good night. The morning sun just started up and I was off the finish my weekend.

09-15-01: Heart & Soul - I was really hoping this event was a sucess. If anyone deserves a great event then it would be Dane Styles. That man pours his heart into his events and this one had all the makings of a excellent party. I mean, how can you go wrong when you have Sir Mix Alot at your event. The location was the Orange Show in San Bernardino. My set time was opening the main stage at 5:00 in the afternoon. I headed out there and got to the event about 15 min before my set time. The main stage was outside on the cement. The stage looked nice but I am sure it was going to look even better when night fell and the light show could start it's magic. I started to spin and everything was going great. I DJed till about 7:30. After my set Nic Nax got on board and pleased the people with his brand of house music. The crowd slowly poured in. When I left about 8:30 things didn't look so good. The masses of people I was expecting to turn out were just not there. Maybe it was due the terrorist attacks just days earlier. I am not sure what kept people away but if you did miss it you missed out on what could have been a excellent party. I hope this does not discourage Dane from putting on more events.

09-14-01: Needle Damage - After what happened a few days ago I didn't know if events were going to be cancelled for this weekend or not. As the President said we must live our lives as normal so that is what I planned to do. It seems like the promoters that planned events for this weekend also wanted to go on with their lives and thier events as normal. The location for this event was like a blast from the past. Deep in the underbelly of downtown was this amazing warehouse that made all of our troubles seem to go away. When I got there Paule was whipping the crowd into a frenzy. I was there to do a 2x4 with Thomas Michael but we had never really practiced this so what it was going to sound like was anybody's guess. Before our set we held a moment of silence for the people that died so tragically 3 days before. Thomas and I proceeded for the next hour and a half. It could have been better in my eyes (but since I am a perfectionist almost everything could be better) but the crowd seemed to enjoy it. Jeff Ryan and 007 then followed us and rocked the crowd with their 2x4 of Nu NRG.

09-11-01: A day that will always live in the collective memory of the entire nation. My heart goes to those who perished and died because of the terrorism over New York and Washington DC. My prayers go the the families of the victims. GOD Bless America.

09-08-01: Ghetto Blaster (Phoenix, AZ) - I always enjoy going to AZ. Especially in the Fall and Winter. The weather is always amazing. I landed at about 8:00 PM and was checked into my hotel. I then chilled for a bit and waited to be picked up for my 1:00 AM slot at the Ice House. I haven't spun at the Ice House in a couple of years but I always have a good time when I do get to spin there. This time I was spinning in the outside area. When I got to the venue Jason Blakemore was halfway into his set. It was a great set. He played a classic Depeche Mode song called "Everything Counts". I love that song and it was great to hear it on a loud system. I don't think a lot of the crowd got what he was doing but I very much appreciated his set. I then went on after him. The crowd was good. The seemed to have tireless energy. I played a tad more housey in the beginning to blend in easily into Jasons' set. I then got into my own trancier groove. After my set I went back to get some sleep and catch my early flight home. I didn't know that this would be the last time that I really would ever feel safe in the air. 2 days later something terrible would change all of our thoughts on getting back on a plane.
