Catching Up With My Past (Part 6)

OK these are my final entries in my old diary...now time to make some new blogs!

08-09-03: Three (Springfield, MO) - It has been a while since I have been to Springfield but I will always remember the last time I was there. I did the closing set at a party called Solstice and it was one of the best out of state experience that I have had. I was booked to go there in the Spring of 2000 but I couldn't attend due to family reasons. So when I got booked for Three, I was very excited. I knew this was going to be a great party. I just felt it when I first talked to the promoter, Nicholas. I landed into Springfield at about 9:00 PM. Nick picked me up at the airport and dropped me off at my suite to rest up for a bit. A few hours later he picked me up and we headed off to the event for my 1:30 am set. When I got on a DJ by the name of Mary Jane from Memphis was rocking the decks with some great Techno. I got on at 1:30 and the crowd just went off. The energy was just amazing. The vibe and the people was just what I needed. It was just a stellar event. The more I gave to the crowd the more they gave back. It really did feel like a shared experience. I stayed for a bit after my set just chatting with people. I eventually made it back into my room with a bag of food from Steak N Shake and watched Sixteen Candles for a bit. Eventually my eyes got heavy and I wandered off to sleep. In the morning Nick picked me up for brunch where met up with the crew and some of the DJ's from the event. After brunch we headed over to a Japanese stroll garden and fed the ducks and koi. It was a perfect way to end my perfect weekend. I met a lot of new friends and grew closer to old friends. A time to remember for sure.

07-26-03: Plush @ Quest (Minneapolis, MN) - Got to LAX with enough time to check in my stuff and grab a couple of magazines before I got on board to my flight to Minneapolis. I landed at around 8:00 pm and my good friend Tyler picked me up to take me to the hotel. He dropped me off and I chilled out in my room till about 11:00 when I was picked by Tyler, Adam and Fleak (all close friends that I am lucky to have in the area) to go to the club. This was my first time to Quest and it is a damn beautiful club. The main room was just so damn nice. I went backstage and grabbed a Newcastle and joined my friends upstairs in the second room where the sounds of Old School House were playing. I danced a little and drank a little and just had great time. I went to get on to DJ the crowd was rocking. There was so much love and energy in the crowd. It was amazing. Kid Icarus was spinning some Epic trance so I stopped the music and was announced and then headed into to some tribal stuff. I built up the set to more melodic stuff that I was playing at the end of my set. I spun till around 2:30. The DJ after me got his records stolen at the club (Sheesh…that is just really sucks, I hope they recover them) so Kid Icarus headed back on. I gathered with my friends and they dropped me back at the hotel. In the morning Tyler, Fleak and Fleak’s mom had some breakfast and Tyler and I got to play in his studio a little. It was a great trip and I hope I get to go back again soon.

07-25-03: Club Vinyl (Oceanside) & Heatwave - Drove to Oceanside and got into the club a little before midnight. I spun here in May and the vibe and number of people seemed to increase in that time. The place was going off. People were dancing, drinking and just having a great time. It was a great night there and it looks like I will be there every other month. Cannot wait to spin there again. After getting off the decks at 1:30 am, I then headed over to Orion to play at the weekly Heatwave at 3:00 am. Got there about 10 minutes late although, I was driving pretty damn fast to get there. There was a nice sized crowd in there and Relay was playing some great house music. I got on the decks and did my thing until about 4:25. I then drove home to get a few hours of sleep before my trip the next day.

07-19-03: All Tranced Out 3- Earlier in the evening I was celebrating my mothers’ 50th Birthday with family and friends over at my Mom’s house. It was pretty crazy. A lot of tequila shots were being had and I was a little bit drunk. After sobering up a little I headed over to my house at about midnight and got some In N Out with Tony Gamboa who was with me. We got to my place and crashed. I wasn’t scheduled to spin till about 4:30 so from about 1:00 to 3:00 I slept. Merlyn met me at my house at around 3:30 and we slowly headed over to Orion. The place was still rocking when I got there. The party looked great and people seemed to be having a great time. I got on the decks and played until 6:00. Great vibe and big smiles were all around. After my set…you know…the Pantry…I really have to stop eating there!!

07-04-03: Dynamite (Portland, OR) - I guess a lot of people do not fly out on the 4th of July because Burbank Airport was dead. I walked into airport. Checked my bags and was pretty much on my way. When I got into Portland I met up with the promoters and Techno DJ from SF, Chris Jackson. Chris and I have spun together before in LA and it was nice to see a friendly face. After checking out the venue we headed to hotel to check in. After a shower and a quick rest we headed back to the venue. After having a beer with Chris I was ready to get on the decks. My set was from 12 to 1:30. When I started there didn't seem like to much of a vibe but the crowd quickly came together and started to pick things up. The crowd seemed to like the scratching especially. The venue was very cool but the DJ booth was about story above the floor so it was hard to grab the energy from the crowd. Chris went on after me and devastated the floor with a Hard Techno assault. His set was ill. It was all over the place. From Techno to Electro breaks, he worked the crowd well. Got back to our hotel at about 4:00 and I went to sleep. Those must have been some damn good black-out curtains because I was out like a light and didn't get up till noon. I ordered some lunch and got ready for my flight home. I called the front desk and asked them what time the shuttle was leaving to the airport. They told me 2:10....that was more then enought time to get to my 3:30 flight back to Burbank. I got down to the lobby a little bit before 2:00 and confirmed that the shuttle would be leaving at 2:10. I waited....at 2:18 I went back to the front desk and asked them about the shuttle. They apologized and said they would call me a cab. I heard them call the cab at 2:20. I wait...and wait.. at 2:40 they call the cab again and again apologized to me for the inconvience. At 2:50 both the shuttle and the cab pull up at the same time. BASTARDS!! I quickly got in the cab and explained that I need to get to the airport ASAP. He drove in record time and got me to the airport at 3:10... I walked up to the counter and I had missed my flight!! DOH!!!!! That was the last flight to Burbank also so the only option I had was wait till the morning or fly to LAX. There was no option. I had to spin in Santa Barbara tonight so I guess LAX it was. The flight was at 6:40 and landed in LA at 9:00. So I checked into that flight. Got a couple of magazines and waited 3 hours in the Portland airport for my flight home.

06-21-03: Into The Mystic - Great night. Great vibe. Great music. This was very good event. When I walked in Skylab 2000 was rocking it out as only he can. The vibe was so thick. I just could feel the love in the room. This was one of those parties where you just felt it and it felt good. Zoox came on after me and he did a great job spinning last night. If you were there you can vouch that this was a great night over at Qtopia. Looking for more good times like this. I am sure there are more to come.

06-07-03: Bigger - Ventured out to the Holiday Skating Rink alone at about 2:00. My set wasn't till 3:30 but it takes me about an hour to drive there. Got there and the parking lot was packed. I somehow found a place to park near the entrance. Got into the venue and it was packed with people going off. I got there and Nuclear Hyde was doing a live show. The vibe and the energy was intense. My set just felt to short. I guess an hour just wasn't good enough. Doran got on after me and kept the place going to the morning hours. I got some coffee, went home, and had a great Sunday.

06-06-03: Naked & Orion - Another night out for Merlyn and myself. First we went down to King King in Hollywood to check out the Frankie Bones show. Great venue. It was my first time checking the place out but I really liked what I saw. We saw a few old friends so we hung out for a bit. Frankie wouldn't come on til later so we had to opt out on seeing him. We then took off to go to Orion. Got there early to check out Jon Pegnato's set but the time slots were wrong so I started spinning as soon as I got there. Good crowd although just a little light in numbers but the vibe was there. After my set we took off to Naked. My set was from 2:00 to 3:30. The place was packed to the gills. When I got up to the tables Beetlejuice was rocking the crowd. I got on and just kept the momentum going. The place was just on fire. The energy was amazing. I had a great time despite the go-go dancers distracting me! LOL. Adam Rush came on after me and just kept the music pumping. After, Merlyn and I headed over to ... yep you guessed it...The Pantry.

05-24-03: Electro Disco Techno Popsicle 5 (San Francisco) - Took a short flight over to Oakland. Waited for my ride to pick me up. I didn't expect a stretch limo that is for damn sure. It was getting close to 7:00 pm and my set was to go from 8:00-9:00 so instead of dropping me off at the hotel the driver took me straight to the party. I have never been to a party in the Concourse but this venue was amazing. It was like having a huge party in a convention center. I cheked out the area I was spinning and Enemy was doing a damn good job in keeping the kids dancing. I made my way backstage for sandwiches (good!) and sushi (bad!!) and had a couple of Red Bulls to keep the energy up. I got on the decks and just played as energetic and uplifting as I could. I had a great time. The vibe, the crowd, the energy and my friends being there all came together to form this amazing moment that I will forever have with me. I hung out for awhile after my set and caught most of Mystere's set (very good). I stayed until the middle of Mars's set and then I took off to the hotel. The limo dropped me off at the Four Seasons Hotel. This couldn't be right?? But it was. I got into my room and 15 minutes later there was a knock on the door. A bell hop walked in with a bucket, filled with Red Bulls, white wine, chocolate and the new CD by Tom Slik and Dyloot (VERY VERY GOOD). I was stunned. I woke up the next morning. Got some room service and and then met up with 007 (Mike) and his girlfriend Kim to go explore the city a little. It was a great time. We met up with Jeff Ryan and his posse to take the limo back to the hotel. Back to LA...darn....couldn't we just stay there one more day!!! I have to thank everyone and Skills for throwing some of the most professional events that I have ever been a part of. They are simply one of the best and there is no doubt to that.

05-16-03: Oasis & Club Vinyl (Oceanside) - Got over to Qtopia pretty early because I had to DJ over in Oceanside after. DJ Dan and Donald Glaude were set to perform at Oasis. The buzz for this party was amazing. The was a beach theme to this party so I put on my shorts and Hawaiian shirt and I was on my way. The DJ booth was set up to look like it was in beach shack. It was great. Since I had to spin early there wasn't much of a crowd but I had a good time. Merlyn, Torin and myself then headed out for Oceanside. I got there right at midnight and started to spin as soon as I walked in. The vibe and the crowd were great. The system was nice and loud. This is place I would love to spin at again. I played 2 hours and then made the long trek home to get some sleep. I had to fly out to Houston the next day so I didn't have much time to get any rest...oh well.

05-02-03: Red - Man this was a great night. Excellent club. I haven't been to Red since it moved to the Arena but that fabulous RED vibe is still intact. It was raining in LA tonight which was kinda strange to have rain so late in the the season. That didn't damper my spirit though. When Torin and I walked in, Scooter and Lavelle from San Diego were tearing up the crowd with some Hard NRG. The scatched and cutted records like mad men. Torin and I did a 2x4 that mixed trance and techno together with a little house. It was a fun set and a fun crowd. Cannot wait to go back...but it will have to be at Red's new home. The club moved to 333 Boylston in Downtown LA. Good bye Arena.

04-26-03: Just A Taste - Headed over to Qtopia late and when I got there Joey Beltram was rocking the decks hard. His style was unrelentless and the crowd seemed to enjoy every second of it. After his set I went on and did what I could. The system wasn't quite what I expected but the crowd was very enthusiastic. I had a good time and finally getting to meet Joey after all these years was a great.

04-12-03: TranceForm (San Diego) - Chris Ewen and I headed out to Pure in San Diego and got there right on time for me to play. The crowd was light when I first started at 10:00. When I got there Golden Boy Mike was playing some melodic hard trance. I got on and just played a bunch of new records I got in the mail. The crowd started building slowly and by the time I was half way through my set there was nice crowd on the dancefloor. Armann the Brainchild from San Francisco was on after me and he kept the crowd going and kept the momentum building with a great set of tribal and progressive. After listening and dancing to his set for a while we took off to head back to LA.

04-05-03: Quest 2 - I didn't get to spin unfortunately due to the time change but I did check out the event. Looked like a good time. Mars was spinning when I got there and he looked like he was experiencing the same problem I was having the night earlier. That damn right turntable kept skipping on him thus making his set not quite as enjoyable as it usually is. Got to catch up with Taylor that night. As always a very sweet man and someone I respect very much. After the party, Merlyn and I head headed to the usual spot.... The Pantry.

04-04-03: Cotton Cande - Very cool event. I was spinning after Skribble so I got there to catch a little of his set. Good stuff indeed. I got ready to spin and chatted with him while he was wrapping up his set. I have to say he is one very nice guy. It was great to spin after him. The crowd was in fever pitch as he dropped some remix of 50 Cent. WICKED. I got on and kept the crowd going till the lights came on. The vibe was great and the energy was amazing. No one wanted to go home. The only bad thing that night was the right turntable. It started skipping for no reason during the latter part of my set. Oh well, cannot win them all.

03-29-03: March Madness - Got into LA at around 3PM after the flight being delayed for some computer error (scary!). Got into my car and headed home. While enroute to my place I got my timeslot for March Madness. 5-6 AM...not bad...I love doing the closing sets. I went home, relaxed and pretty much slept till about 2:30. I headed out to Rialto at the Skating Rink and got there a little while before my set. I got to catch some of Krembo's energetic set and I started on to mine. The energy and vibe was great. People were really digging the music and it came across in their smiles and reaction. It was a great morning and it was nice to really feel the love in the air. After my set I headed home, got some coffee and watched the news...not a bad Sunday morning.

03-28-03: Fixation (Phoenix, AZ) - I haven't spun in AZ since the weekend before the 9/11 attacks. I headed out to the airport at around 10:30am for my 12:40 flight from Burbank to Phoenix. Got into AZ and was greeted by the promoter of the club, Matt, at the baggage claim. I was dropped off at the hotel and after a cat nap I was picked up by friend and fellow DJ Inertia. We went out for dinner and while in the car he let me check out his new remix of Elton John's "Rocket Man". Excellent track. I can see why Oakenfold is playing the hell out of it. I am sure it will be in my charts soon. After dinner we made it over to the venue and caught the last half hour of CL McSpadden's epic set. This guy can really spin well. One of the best DJ's I heard in a while. Just going from trance to breaks in a seamless fashion. Great stuff. The system was pumping and the floor was filling up. I started my set at around 1:00 am and continued to 3:00 am. The crowd was hooting and hollering and generally having a great time. I fed off the energy and just played from the heart. It was great show and I cannot wait to play in Arizona again. A year and a half is just way to long to go by. I had a great time hanging around Matt and Inertia and I cannot wait to join them in AZ again.

03-22-03: How Sweet It Was - This party was supposed to be held over at Orion but due to it being closed this weekend event was moved to the Holiday Skate Center in Rialto. I had spun at this place before and it looked like a great venue for a big one room event. They set up 2 rooms in the middle of the floor and used a sound curtain to help deaden the sound. The vibe of the event was good as plenty of smiling faces were around. The doors opened late for the event so my hour and half set was pushed back to little a less then a hour. Oh well. Had a great time spinning and hanging with friends.

03-15-03: Super Happy Fun Time (San Francisco) - After heading down to Santa Cruz for lunch I headed out to San Francisco. This was going to be a special trip since my good friend and fellow Biohazard DJ, Flite, just moved up there and I hadn't seen him in a while. After checking in to the hotel I made may over to Berkley to meet up with Dyloot and Flite. We had dinner at this amazing Chinese place and then headed back to the hotel to get ready for the party. I got a little lost on my way to the venue but I eventually go there. It was in this little club surrounded by warehouses. I got in and headed to the stage. The crowd was going off. It was nice sized crowd of about 400. The sound was good and the vibe was great. Each track I played seemed to build more and more momentum. Unfortunately the party got shut down a hour early (right after my set) but for those that were there it seemed like they had a great night.

03-14-03: Smack Attack 2 (San Jose) - I started out my journey to the bay area but before I could I had to get my car checked out. I have been having problems with my battery all week. Got it checked out from Pep Boys and the battery is dead. Got a new one and I was on my way. After a long drive check into the hotel and waited for a limo to pick me up to go to the venue. The venue was amazing. When you walk in there was 2 big rooms seperated by Pexiglass. You could see clearly that both rooms were going off (apparently, the event sold out). I got into the second room where Tronic was getting the crowd jumping with his hardcore set. My set was supposed to start at 10:45 and go to 12:45 (the party ended at 2) and I also was supposed to be doing a 2x4 with Dyloot. He was running late so I started my set. On the second record he came in and we both started our set together. The crowd ate up what were spinning. The vibe and intestity was amazing. Our 2 hour set didn't seem long enough. After our set Denise and St.John started up and they both started to rock it. Dyloot and I were feeling a little to warm from the immense heat inside the venue and made our way outside were we chatted for awhile before heading back to the hotel. It was an amazing party, with amazing venue and a vibe to match. Rocking!!!

03-08-03: The Lost Kingdom of Bass - Another great Freedom Force Five event. I got inside to a packed room and spun from 12:00 to 1:30 to a very energetic and enthusiastic crowd. The vibe was intense. There was a lot of love in the room while I was on. I couldn't explain it but it was just amazing. I had one of the best times DJing for this crowd. Once again another great night in the City of Angels. Raves are dead???? No one told this crowd :)
