Man, I need to get on the ball. Part of my 2016 hopes for myself is to keep consistent with my blogging and content on my site. I am not doing a good job. I have some back log to get through so please forgive me. Here is one them. This is my mix from the re:love day party at the end of August 2016. It was a great party, a little warm but the vibe was magical as you can tell from the pic above. I started off my set with some classic Ice Cube and then I get into that Sunday park party vibe. I have a huge love of Drum N’ Bass. One of my favorite mixes back in the early 90’s was a double pack that R.A.W. came out with called “R.A.W. is Dead”. It was a double pack that had some of the best dark and twisted music I ever heard. While I originally played breakbeat techno when I first started DJing raves I quickly morphed into other genres as the music started to become more diversified.
However the love of Dn’B never left. I even did a mix of it in 1995 that you can hear below.
I always loved the LTJ Bukem style of Dn’B. When I heard the first Progression Sessions mix in 1997 I quickly fell in love with that sound and that series of mixes. Recently I started listening again to those mixes and newer mixes by other artists like DJ Marky and those on Hospitality. I started collecting some music also and I had the bright idea to just put it out there on Facebook that I would like to play a random Dn’B set.
Lo and behold, my buddy Sal from Audiophile Family decided the throw an event and have me headline. I wasn’t expecting that at all. It really excited to play a style that I am not known for. I didn’t want to do the music an injustice but I did want to show my love for the style. That was what this was really about. Just the love of the music. I didn’t know if I was going to go down in flames trying to DJ this style. I mean, I haven’t played this kind of music in 20 years.
At the show, in a warehouse in Riverside, I was nervous, but it was that nervous excitement. I played for little over an hour and I loved every second of it. I couldn’t really tell how the mix would come out but after I listened to it when I got home I was pretty happy with it. So here it is and I hope you enjoy it. I don’t know when the next time I will be able to get to play some Drum N’ Bass again but I hope it isn’t another 20 years. It was too much fun and can’t wait for the next one.
I really have to get better at this blogging thing. I mean I have things to say and opinions to share but for some reason I just can’t find the time to actually put them down in blog style format. I am going to try and change that up. So expect a few over the next few days as I get caught up on all my recent live mixes.
So Alhambra has been a House music hot spot lately. With Revival happening every Tuesday and now Soulful Sundays holding court on the upstairs patio at Fronteras Mexican Grill on Main Street, it is a good time to be a Househead on the Eastside.
I recently played twice at Soulful Sundays with Steve Loria on both dates. This set is from the first date in early August. It was a great time with a packed floor and a great vibe. During the middle of my set I mixed in a little freestyle into my set as I could tell the crowd that was there would appreciate the mini flashback. So turn this out and get your groove on. Look for me to come back to Soulful Sundays soon.
I don't get to DJ very often back to back with cohort Jason Blakemore, so it is always a honor to do so. He and I started off in the LA underground around the same time in the early 1990's and we have played at so many parties over the years together that seeing each other was very commonplace.
One thing that wasn't commonplace was us DJing together. This is only the 3rd time it has happened in the 22 years we have both been DJing in the scene.
Frooty Loops was a fun show. Driving out to San Bernardino reminded me of all the times I used to DJ out at the Masterdome and The Hudson. I got there before Jason so I started off the set. He started around the 30min mark of this mix. We then went back and forth every 3 songs or so. It was a pleasure to DJ with man, JB! I hope to do it again soon. Hope you enjoy the set.
