Fester and I - Live at Technocolor (02/10/18)

July 30, 2018  /  Thee-O

image1.jpeg

I have been seriously lagging on this blog of mine. I really would like to focus on it but to be honest, life tends to get in the way. So now I am playing catch up with some of the mixes I have done this year. So no better place to start than with this mix I did with Fester back in February. I have known Fester for a very long time. We go way back. Even though we have a long history together this was the first time we have ever DJed a back to back set. Crazy.

We didn't have any plans for this set. I think we talked maybe once or twice about it and we didn't have much of a game plan other than that we were playing Techno. So that is what we did. We played for 2 hours switching off after every 3 tracks. So if you are looking for some banging techno you came to the right mix.

Love Affair with Liquid Dn'B

July 05, 2018  /  Thee-O

I make it no secret that I love me some Drum N' Bass. I especially love the atmospheric to jazzy sounds of the sub genre Liquid DnB. So far this year I have done 3 Drum N' Bass mixes and I plan on doing a few more. Especially since I bought a LARGE vinyl collection at Dr. Freecloud's Record Shoppe. I was there for Record Store Day at the end of April and I was there just in time. They had recently purchased a very large Drum N' Bass record collection. There was a ton of stuff from  Good Looking Records, which is the label that was ran by one of my fave DJ's, LTJ Bukem. This collection was pristine. So I guess when Ron D. Core made me a offer that I couldn't refuse, well I couldn't refuse. I ended up with the entire collection. So what I did immediately was recorded my first vinyl mix in the studio I have done in years. I did it Live on Facebook and also recorded it at the same time. Below are the results of that first mix. I still have enough from the collection I purchased for several more mixes so tuned.

I also have done two mixes with newer tracks using my XDJ's or my DDJ-1000. The latest one is the mix I did over Memorial weekend, in where I tested recording and using my DDJ-1000 controller for full mix for the first time. I have to say I really like this controller and by having easy access to DJ in my house and not having to head into the studio to record, well let's just say expect a lot more mixes. I plan on doing a new mix every season (quarter) so expect a new one this fall. Check out the first 2 mixes in the Liquid Funk mixes below.

Slinky 19 thoughts and mix

Slinky19_group.png

Three weeks ago I came back from one of my favorite events of the year. The past 3 years that I have returned back to Slinky have been filled with amazing memories with beautiful people. Every year just keeps getting better and better. The vibes and love have grown exponentially as well. DJ Dan joined us this year and his set was just amazing. In fact all of the DJ's were so good. Nothing but quality music all weekend. I think I said this last year but if you have never gone then you really must check it out. If you are into camping and house music, well then consider this a no brainer.

The first Slinky Party way back in 2000.

I was very fortunate to be part of the fist Slinky so many years ago and now to be a part of the family again, well I am even more fortunate now. It is just a such a great escape from the city. Everyone there is filled with love and graciousness. I cannot emphasize enough how special this event is. Take a peek at this video below from Slinky 19 to get a small idea.

So on to my mix. I will admit, it is a little all over the place. I was just feeling it. I played some house all over the spectrum of sub-genres out there. So far this has been a favorite mix of mine in a while. Hopefully you like it to. Also, if you would like to hear all of the mixes of this amazing campout just visit the Jam On It Website.

So Why Would I Buy a DJ Controller?

April 17, 2018  /  Thee-O

My new PioneerDJ DDJ-1000 in my home office.

My new PioneerDJ DDJ-1000 in my home office.

2 years ago, I pretty much set up the ideal DJ Rig in my studio. 2 XDJ-1000mk2’s, DJM-900NXS2, 2 1200 Technics MK2 in a custom-built DJ booth. I added the PioneerDJ AS-1 and DJS-1000 last year and I pretty much can do anything I want as a DJ with this rig. I dubbed it “The Beast”.  I have made several new mixes on this rig and I love DJing on it. It’s just too much fun. So why the need to have a controller?

Well It’s a couple of reasons. First of I am a DJ and I love technology. I love how technology changes things that were once familiar. I have always followed DJ technology. I didn’t tend to always get the latest and greatest throughout my years. In fact, I think in the 30 plus years of DJing I have only owned 5-6 different mixers. I saw my friends and peers move into the time code vinyl and while I appreciated the technology I didn’t want to move into that direction because it looked like so much of a hassle to set up. I just didn’t really want to DJ with a laptop too. I vowed I wouldn’t be one of “those DJ’s”. However, I was not opposed to going digital and I did so in 2006 with CDJ’s and then moved over to USB’s only in 2013. I always wanted to have something I could use in a mobile type situation though.

My Studio DJ Rig, AKA The Beast!

My Studio DJ Rig, AKA The Beast!

2 years ago, I DJed at a wedding and took a lot of my gear. I used to do the mobile DJ thing when I was in high school, so I was used to it and since this was a one off, I didn’t really think of getting something more mobile. I did tell myself that if I got more wedding gigs that I would get a controller. Earlier this month I did another wedding and this time I only too my XDJ’s that we plugged into my friends Pioneer DJ controller. This was ideal because we were both able to DJ with the style that best suited us. After this gig though I decided to get a controller for mobile use.

The debate was to go with something like the new PioneerDJ DDJ-1000 or an all in one unit like the XDJ-RX2. I have used the XDJ-RX several times and I liked it, however I was hoping that when PioneerDJ came out with the second version that they would include 4 channels. They did not. Darn. So, when I saw the DDJ-1000 at NAMM this year, I thought this could be what I wanted to use. It was light, super portable, full size jog wheels with new display’s in the center of them and 4 channels. The only thing was I would need a laptop. After debating for a while I decided to go with it. I have a dedicated laptop that I could use with it and it would be perfect to set up in the house, take it along to gatherings, take it to BBQ’s. Etc.

Now that I have had it in the house for a few days, I have to say that I love it. It is so nice to be able to just DJ whenever I want. No need to get into the studio if I want to practice. I can just go into my home office and play a little. I did that this morning in fact before I went into work. I just played some tunes while I had my morning coffee. I can get used to this!
